Is this a good choice for oddly shaped or oblong rails and handles?
Yes, this mount is excellent for oddly shaped attachment points.

Can the ball be removed exposing a hole with threads?
The 1" ball attached to the RAP-B-401U can be removed exposing the 1/4 x 20 nut.

Will this clamp fit around the gunwale of a typical 14 ft. aluminum resort boat ?
As long as the bar, railing, tube, or flat edge that you want to use as an attachment point is between 1" and 2.2" in diameter or width, then the RAP-B-401U will fit.
