Troubleshooting

If your GDS® is not charging your device, follow the below steps.

Step 1: Check the power supply

Cigarette lighter adapter (CLA)

  • Is the CLA fully engaged?
  • If present, does your CLA illuminate showing that there is power present to the plug?
  • Does the nose or tip of the CLA protrude from the housing or does it sit flush like it is stuck?
  • Do other items plugged into the socket work?
  • If you plug the USB cable into a different CLA and into a different device, does it work?
  • Is the CLA fully engaged?

Hardwire/step down converter chargers

  • Is the male Micro-B USB end firmly plugged into the female Micro-B USB port on the dock?
  • Unplug the male Micro-B USB from the dock and plug it directly into another device – does it charge?
  • Are there any cuts or kinks in the cable?
  • Are there sharp bends at the USB connectors?
  • Can you connect a separate device?

Outlet plugs

  • Is the male Micro-B USB end firmly plugged into the female Micro-B USB port on the dock?
  • Unplug the male Micro-B USB from the dock and plug it directly into another device – does it charge?
  • Are there any cuts or kinks in the cable?
  • Are there sharp bends at the USB connectors?
  • Can you connect a separate device?

Step 2: Check the cable

Cigarette lighter adapter (CLA)

  • Are both ends of the cable firmly mated with their proper connections?
  • Are there sharp bends at the USB connectors?
  • Does moving or bending the cable change anything?
  • Does moving or bending the connectors change anything?

Hardwire/step down converter chargers

  • Is the male Micro-B USB connector firmly mated with the female connection on the dock?
  • Are both ends of the cable firmly mated with their proper connections?
  • Are there sharp bends at the USB connectors?
  • Does moving or bending the cable change anything?
  • Does moving or bending the connectors change anything?

Outlet plugs

  • Are both ends of the cable firmly mated with their proper connections?
  • Are there sharp bends at the USB connectors?
  • Does moving or bending the cable change anything?
  • Does moving or bending the connectors change anything?

Step 3: Check the GDS® Dock

  • Are all the docking pins visible?
  • Are any pins pressed lower than the others?
  • Are there any physical contaminants in the dock/pin area?

    • If so, please clean with warm water (no soap needed), or...
    • Clean with a normal plastic toothbrush
  • Are the pins clean? Has anything been spilled on them? Are they wet or sticky?

    • If so, please clean with warm water (no soap needed), or...
    • Clean with a normal plastic toothbrush

Step 4: Check the IntelliSkin® protective sleeve

  • Does the connector look damaged?
  • Is there anything on the bottom of the skin that would prevent the contacts from contacting the pins?

    • If so, please clean with warm water (no soap needed), or...
    • Clean with a normal plastic toothbrush
  • Are there any contaminants present?

    • If so, please clean with warm water (no soap needed), or...
    • Clean with a normal plastic toothbrush
  • Is the bottom of the skin smooth?
  • Is the bottom of the skin sticky to the touch?

    • If so, please clean with warm water (no soap needed), or...
    • Clean with a normal plastic toothbrush
  • Is there any discoloration on the brass/gold contacts?

    • If so, please clean with warm water (no soap needed), or...
    • Clean with a normal plastic toothbrush

Step 5: Check the phone or tablet

  • Gently remove the IntelliSkin® sleeve from the device – once removed, plug your device into a known working power supply. Does it start charging? Does it charge slowly?
  • If your device doesn’t start charging, plug the same cable into another device to see if it charges.
  • Does the device charge when you plug the cable that normally plugs into the dock into the device?

Caring for your IntelliSkin® Sleeve

How do I tell if my IntelliSkin® sleeve needs maintenance?

Cleaning is the only maintenance that should be needed. We recommend using the IntelliSkin® contact brush to clean the GDS® contacts on the bottom of your IntelliSkin® sleeve to prevent any loss in functionality.

What if the pogo pins on my GDS® Dock™ are damaged?

The dock will need to be replaced. Contact us for details regarding possible warranty coverage.

What if my device is stuck in the IntelliSkin® sleeve?

It is unlikely the case and the device will not be separable, even if damaged. To remove your device, using a little more force than usual might be necessary.

What if the IntelliSkin® connector broke off inside the device?

The connector should be removable by yourself or by a device technician. Take some degree of care to ensure no damage is done to the device when removing the connector.

What happens if I spill liquid on my IntelliSkin® sleeve?

Most fluids will not cause any damage to Intelliskin®. However, there could be a film or a coating that could diminish or stop electrical signals from passing through the dock to the skin if there is a residue that is left on the bottom of your IntelliSkin® sleeve. Clean with warm soapy water and gently brush for most fluid residues.

Understanding Power Delivery

What is USB Type-A power delivery?

There is no such thing as Type-A power delivery. However, there is “fast charging” that leverages the USB 2.0 standard. These are proprietary technologies developed by the chip and device manufacturers such as Samsung, Qualcomm, Huawei, and others.

What is USB Type-C power delivery?

Power delivery is a digital communication standard that enables the device and the charger to communicate and agree upon the maximum capable charging current and voltage that they both can provide/accept. USB Type-C power delivery is implemented at one or both ends of the cable. The goal was to create a faster, safer charging standard that allows for up to 100W of power of a standardized cable as opposed to a “proprietary” cable.

What do I need to get USB Type-C power delivery?

A device that supports the USB-IF PD protocol and a charger (with a connector or cable) that supports the USB-IF protocol.

What is the difference in output between a tablet and phone?

Tablets and phones typically have different batteries in terms of capacities. Tablets have larger batteries, most times due to their larger physical size and larger displays. Temperature needs to be safely regulated and monitored, which is why most tablets and phones today have a maximum input power of ~20W or less due to concerns about heat generation in the battery pack from the charging process.

What do I do if limited to no power is being delivered to the device?

Check to ensure that the charge indicator is showing on your device. If not, check the power supply to the charger to ensure that power is being provided. It’s possible that it could be a bad fuse, loose wire, etc.

If the charge indicator is showing charging, but the battery state appears to be getting lower, check the connectors on the dock and charger to make sure they are fully seated and connected. Make sure the contacts on the Intelliskin® connector are clean and ensure there is no debris in the dock where the pogo pins are located. In addition, check to make sure that there is nothing that could be coating or preventing the pogo pins from making solid contact.
