The world we inhabit is an ever evolving, rapidly developing machine. The agricultural industry is forced to adapt in order to solve the real world issues that all of us face.
Current global population trends are frightening, to say the least, especially when analyzed in conjunction with estimated global food demand. Naturally, there’s a direct relationship between population and demand for appropriate food and water. The more people, the more food and water required. According to the United Nations, the world’s population is estimated to climb to more than 9.75 billion by 2050. Drastic action needs to be taken to ensure that we’re not starving ourselves by the time 2050 finally rolls around.
Feeding an estimated 9.75 billion people by 2050 is no small feat. Food production worldwide needs to increase in both yield and efficiency, with developing countries who have economies dependent on agrarian activities, forced to take much of the load. If “90 percent of the growth in crop production globally is expected to come from higher yields and increased cropping intensity,” how is this growth actually going to be achieved?
Farming’s digital transformation
The answer to this lies within precision farming and technological advancements that remain to be implemented across many parts of the globe. Digitizing the vehicles used on farms with auto-steering, guidance, boom control technologies, and more, is an essential first step to tackling this issue. We can make better sense of data collected for increased soil health. Better seed placement, optimal fertilizer application and irrigation systems is also crucial.
The ag industry is taking these steps. But most of the efforts are being focused within developed countries due to sheer cost of precision ag systems. In time, developing countries will have no choice but to adopt technology on the farm in order to meet the higher demand for food despite costs. This will hopefully continue to decrease as production efficiency improvements are realized.
