I bought a diamond base plate RAM mount w/ X-Grip thinking that I could use the diamond shaped plate to fit between the rear defroster and the hazard switches.
Once I received the part, I test fitted and realized that the plate was too big to fit. From there I had to reassess my needs:
- Mounting the phone isn't necessary 24/7
- When in use, the phone is within the driver's line of sight
- Looks clean and/or unnoticed

Found a place for the diamond ball plate to fit but the edges were too wide and wouldn't allow it to fit snug.

Dremel to the rescue. I shaved off the edge of the aluminum on both sides.

Much better!!

Diamond plate attached. It was VERY DIFFICULT to get my hand and Dremel in there because of clearance of the lid.

Attached the RAM mount and X-Grip. Placement of X-Grip when stowed.

Here's the final result.

When closed, the lid clears the mount w/ ease. I know it's not the prettiest solution but it serves all my listed needs very well. When the phone is in position, the lid does not get in the way of normal driving. I am aware that the phone is not centered w/ the dash but this was the only position that allowed it to clear the lid. Eventually I will integrate a charging cable inside the driver side glove box but will wait until I upgrade my phone to see if Apple changes the dock connector or not.
