Since picking up Project86 I have been itching to test the car out as it was meant to be driven. I plan on taking Project86 out to some autocross events since I am not comfortable enough to get on a real track just yet. I thought it would be fun to be able to record my runs, but what is the best way to do it?

Since I just got the Iphone5 and it takes quite good video, I went looking for a way to record video with my Iphone5. I wanted something that could be used in various locations, didn’t look shaky and was quick to move around. I ended up finding the RAM Twist Lock Suction Cup Mount with Universal X-Grip.

When I got the package I pulled out the two separate pieces and using the two supplied screws attached them together. The mount is affixed via an industrial looking suction cup that is operated using a “twist lock” mechanism. The phone or what ever you want to attach goes at the end of an articulating arm and is held in with the “X-Grip”. You basically pinch the X to open it up and stick the phone into it. Then release the X and the rubber feet grab the phone. It seems quite secure in there.

I decided to put the mount right under the rear view and try out the turn by turn on the Iphone5. It worked beautifully. Easy to see and the mount was not obtrusive to driving. Now on to why I really wanted the mount, video. I first tried to take some video in the same location I had the mount when using it as a GPS. I didn’t like how it looked. You could not see any of the front of the car so it seemed weird. I moved the mount down and to the right so that you could see the fender hump. I need to see if I can adjust the phone in the X-Grip to get rid of the mount in the upper left corner.

I love this thing. It is easy to use and seems to take vibration out of the video. The X-Grip could probably hold a variety of cameras and the suction cup is super strong. I think you could use this on the outside of the car, not sure I have the guts to do it though. I can’t wait to get out to an AutoX and take some videos of the laps.
