Humminbird 1198 install with RAM Mount

There have been lots of questions regarding the install of RAM mounts in the console of a Bass Cat. I have finally completed mine and will share all the details on how I completed the project. Disclaimer -This is the way that I decided to do my install, I did not go to my dealer or run this by Bass Cat. Hopefully I wont have any issues. If I experience any issues I will be sure to post them and let others know.

Here is what I am running and how the set up was. 2010 Puma FTD with 997 in dash and 917 at console. I purchased an 1198 for a second graph in the console area and wanted to swap my 997 and 917. This would give me side imaging on the bow and then allow me to use the 917 for map data only.

Here is what I used and bought.
RAM mount D-111U http://www.ram-mount.com I went with the longer arm because of the location I was mounting it.
Cordless Drill with low and high speeds
5/16 drill bit
Bolts - 5/16-18 x 2 SS - 5/16-18 x 1-1/2 SS
various washers from 5/8 - 7/16 and smaller
5/16 Lock nuts Nylon inserts
small can of polyurethane and Tube of black silicone caulk
door walkway rubber molding - cut a small section for behind the RAM ball - see pic below



Everything was bought at Lowes minus the RAM mount. Started by removing the pop up cleat in the picture below.



Use one of the screws from the pop up cleat and mount the RAM ball in the farthest back hole. Tighten down and then mount arm from RAM mount to check position and clearance for the throttle. Once the ball was in the location you want mark the other holes with a while paint marker to make sure nothing moves while drilling. Drill holes with 5/16 bit in low reverse until you are through the gel coat then switch to high and finish the holes. Keeping the drill in reverse the entire time. With three holes complete remove the ball and finish the last hole. Note-the hardware is larger then the screws that were used for the pop up cleat. You could find the same size if your worried about a larger hole.



Once holes are complete double check with 5/16 bolt then polyurethane the holes for water proofing. I used multiple coats over two days. Next cut a section of rubber molding to fit behind the RAM ball for protecting the fiberglass and to add a little cushion.



Once the polyurethane is dry mount the ball. I used various washers on the back side of the fiberglass because my fiberglass was not smooth on the back side. There is a rib that adds stability to the inner wall which created a bit of an obstacle. My initial plan was to mount a plate behind the RAM ball to give it stability but as you can see that was not possible with the rib in there. My next thought was to use large washers to act as a plate. Hopefully this will work...time will tell.



Once ball is mounted and bolts are tightened you are good to mount your graph and finish the wiring. Last thing is to fill the front hole from the pop up cleat with black silicone.
